Studies dealing with the well-known olfactory powers of insects have been undertaken for a number of purposes, using different methods. Many investigators have observed the behavioral response elicited by odor stimuli in order to localize olfactory reception on the antenna, as was first done conclusively by Von Frisch (1921), or to study the whole animal's odor threshold and odor discrimination (Von Frisch, 1919, Dethier, 1954, and many others) or, finally, to study the animal's orientation toward the odor source (Fabre, 1879; Schwinck, 1954; Steiner, 1953, 1954; E. O. Wilson and Bossert, 1963; Lindauer and Martin, 1963; Lindauer, 1963). We have directed our research at the function of the receptor cells themselves, mainly by the use of extracellular electrophysiological recordings. This work has permitted us to supplement the results of the abovementioned behavioral studies. More importantly, it has been possible to establish many functional details of the unit receptor-cell responses which...
