Abstract:
Fruits of ten different Rosa taxa were analysed for their contents of total phenolics and carotenoids.
The results show a wide range in the content of the total carotenoids depending on species/cultivars, whereas there was less variation in the content of total phenolics.
The antioxidants in rose hips may have potentially beneficial health effects, in contrast to the adverse effects reported from supplementation with synthetic -carotene in intervention trials with smokers.
The variation in antioxidant levels noticed in this investigation is important knowledge for the selection of plant material to be used in food production, health industry, and future breeding programs.
